"I'm sorry, Hunter." Her eyes welled up, then spilled a tear over her cheek. "I'm willing to compromise about you working, but I'm not going ot Texas. And I'm definitely not giving up my male patients."

He stared at her, dumbstruck.

She swiped her cheek with her hand. "I'm sorry. More than you know."

Rising, she crossed the room, opened the parlor door, and left. He let her go, still reeling from her being "willing to compromise* about him working. What a great bunch of tripe.

 

Even if it's a little hard to imagine that this could have actually happened in Chicago in 1883, it is very nice to read a story about when women's liberation started, and what it was like for a young woman to be a doctor when no men wanted to take her seriously.
