Emma stuck her face to the window to watch the rain. She not only inherited her grandmother’s power of sight, she can accomplish much more. Like most children without siblings growing up amongst adults, she is precocious yet at times lonely. When a murderer is loose in Newark, a maniac with a thirst for killing little girls, she begins to understand why her Granny Dottie called her sight a curse. She will need all her powers to catch a killer and help the people in her life: Detective Hank Apple, her teacher Christina Tyler, and her little family of three. Only … the madman knows who she is!
With a degree in commerce, Joss has worked as a consultant for more than twenty years, writing copy for marketing firms and assisting start-up companies launch their business. She recently made the switch from composing copy and promos, to writing fiction and prose. She is developing her style through courses and the support of other writers. She is a member of the Romance Writers of America and is presently working on honing three other novels for publication. Hunk, hunky … when I read the word, I expect to find a burly, yet well-built man with a strong jaw and piercing eyes—those wet, know-it-all eyes that stare right into your soul. When asked, you won’t even remember what color they are. I sometimes tend to forget to describe the color in some of the hunky characters in my books. And yet, for me, the eyes are the most important quality in a leading man or woman. They might even wear glasses. Doesn’t matter somehow. Remember Peter O’Toole in Goodbye Mr. Chips, the 1969 version with Petula Clark?
That movie portrays him as the hunk of his time. Hell, he may even have been responsible for the birth of this expression. The word Hunk was only first recognized in 1972, three years after the movie aired. In this story of a Headmaster and a school teacher, Peter O’Toole is thin, gangly, yet he has a way of staring, so shyly, so … reverently. Puts my heart in a rollercoaster tailspin. The gaze!
That’s when it dawns on me.The word hunk is different for every writer, every reader, and every judgy-wudgy out there.
This may be why I called my detective Hank, in I Can See You, to rhyme with Hunk. Amelia, Emma’s friend first lays eyes on him and even though she is ten going on eleven, she smiles and tells Christina, “Hank’s a hunk, Miss Tyler.” So the word has definitely found acceptance in our society.
However, to me a hunk also means a man who owns up to his fears, but will find the courage to face them. This is Hank, actually, a man who doesn’t always share the difficult moments he experiences, a man reluctant to confide and who needs to be coaxed to do so (coaxing a man can be so much fun). In fact, Hank fears more the big softy teddy-bear heart inside him than he does the mad man he needs to rope and take off the streets. This means he is also more torn up inside about what is happening to a soft spoken child, Emma, than losing his own life. Hank also shows depth in dealing with his thoughts: On his way to the door, he doubled back to take one last peek at the woman he loved. The real reason he hadn’t spoken up dealt more with other issues, like the shame of betraying his former avowal of love to her. A bloody miracle she was even back in his arms. She’d certainly held nothing back. One meaning of the word hunk could very well be Hank Apple.
