Royce Walker, a former FBI Agent, who’s opened a private security firm with his brothers, has always had the hots for the prim, proper Assistant District Attorney, but considered her hand’s off because of a family connection. However, when danger threatens Lauren, he isn’t willing to stand by and watch her get hurt. Now the passion for survival is only rivaled by the passion burning between them. And that passion, might just be the death of them both

Hot Secrets is a quick and hot read, but a little weak on the character development.
Hot Secrets starts with Royce and Lauren meeting a party for Lauren’s father. Royce is keeping a secret from Lauren from the beginning, especially because he can feel that there is an attraction between them. Lauren’s father has hired Royce to be Lauren’s security guy, because he has received threats against her. The fact that Lauren is the assistant district attorney on a very high profile case does not make things easy for Royce at all. Lauren is confident and secure in her work, but very far from it in her personal life. Her ex fiancée did not treat her well, so her self esteem is so low it’s almost inexistent. This does not stop her from flirting with Royce, though, up to the point where she brings him home with her as she leaves the party.
The plot in Hot Secrets is a little convoluted, but still pretty easy to follow, and the main part of the story – finding out who is after Lauren, while also keeping her somewhat in the dark, and to show some steamy romance between Lauren and Royce – is well done. I wish Lauren had a little more back-bone, though, because even if she seems quite uninhibited while with Royce, she is riddled with self-doubt for most of Hot Secrets. And she really has so much going for her, if she could just find a way to work through her insecurities.
And there is one thing I don’t like in my romances… the ‘I’m on the pill’ explanation. the very first time they are together, when none of the characters have a condom handy, but are horny enough to want to go there anyway. And Royce and Lauren did go there – as if the pill can protect people form diseases. That was one reason why Hot Secrets got three stars from me rather than four, as the storyline did indeed deliver what it promised.
Royce is an easy character to enjoy, even if I don’t get why he was keeping the fact that Lauren was work as well as pleasure for so long. Hot Secrets has some really good love scenes between Royce and Lauren, though, so if you want to read something hot and don’t mind that the characters don’t evolve very much in any direction, you should definitely pick it up.
Hot Secrets is written in third person point of view, and follows both Lauren’s and Royce’s thoughts. It also follows the mysterious would-be killer, and it takes quite a while to figure out just who the culprit is, which is always a big plus in my opinion.
“I think,” he said softly, “that I’d like to know more about you, Lauren Reynolds.” Something wonderful, wild and wicked stirred inside her with his words, with the heat in his expression – - something wild, wicked, and oh so unfamiliar. This man didn’t fit that ‘safe’ profile she’d gravitated toward because it was expected of her.
“Don’t fall for him,” she murmured. “You can’t fall for him.” She was vulnerable right now, recovering from the past, and perhaps in danger, and she knew it. She was turning Royce into her knight in shining armor, and she knew all too well that was a fairy tale that didn’t exist.
She trusted him, and his secret pact with her father was going to be the poison that killed their relationship.
